Position Overview

The Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) works with a global network of partners to build a dynamic industry that makes clean cooking accessible to families around the world. Established in 2010, CCA supports the development, sale, distribution, and consistent use of clean cooking solutions that transform lives by improving health, protecting the climate and environment, and helping families save time and money. In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, CCA is working to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2030.

The Director, Climate Impacts reports directly to the Senior Director, Climate Science and Standards, and is an integral part of the Science, Evidence, and Learning (SEL) team. They work closely with all CCA teams to ensure alignment and integration of all climate-related objectives and activities, especially those related to clean cooking in the carbon market. They also provide data analysis for the SEL team regularly, and for the organization as needed.

The Director, Climate Impacts supports the Senior Director, Climate Science and Standards in planning and executing program design and implementation, and in providing technical guidance pertaining to climate especially in the context of clean cooking in the carbon market. Most of this work is done as part of the CCA-led Climate and Clean Cooking Consortium (4C), a group of partners supporting countries’ efforts in using cooking energy interventions to achieve climate goals as part of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets or through the international carbon market.

The Director, Climate Impacts is an active member of the 4C group, and provides day-to-day management and oversight of several 4C workstreams including:

  • Technical consultations supporting country governments to facilitate the implementation and measurement, reporting and verification of NDC-related clean cooking action, including through CCA’s Delivery Unit Network (DUN);
  • Due diligence to help donor/buyer countries ensure their investments reflect real world emissions reductions, including through calculating greenhouse gas emissions reductions and risk assessment; and
  • Advising ratings agencies and other carbon market stakeholders (including Designated Operational Entities (DOEs), Designated National Authorities (DNAs), auditors, and other validators/verifiers) on how to better evaluate clean cooking carbon projects and their benefits.

The Director, Climate Impacts also supports the Senior Director, Climate Science and Standards in the development of a new modular methodology for crediting emissions reductions specific to cooking projects, which will be available for utilization under Article 6.2 and potentially Article 6.4, as well as the voluntary carbon market, and is intended to be applicable to a variety of transition scenarios.

The Director, Climate Impacts also supports the Chief Science and Learning Officer (CSLO) by providing data analysis related to CCA’s impact in the clean cooking ecosystem. This includes calculating estimated reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and woody biomass use from CCA-supported projects and running modeling scenarios based on those projections and calculations.

Essential Functions

  • Support the overall development, strategic planning, implementation, and management of CCA’s clean cooking and climate efforts.
  • Provide day-to-day management and oversight of 4C workstreams related to the DUN, carbon purchase due diligence, and ratings agencies.
  • Support clean cooking carbon methodology development.
  • Model CCA program-related climate and environmental impacts.
  • Support the upkeep of CCA’s impact calculator, an in-house tool used to estimate CCA program-related impacts.
  • Develop PowerPoint presentations, which effectively communicate impact data.
  • Provide other data analysis as needed.
  • Regularly represent CCA in various international fora, as well as virtually, covering technical and broader CCA areas.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with key climate and carbon market stakeholders in the energy space.
  • Maintain working knowledge of UNF and CCA agreement process )for both contracts and grants), and when to utilize the proper templates accordingly. (As applicable to the role)
  • Draft and review agreements and maintain an understanding of all agreement terms and applicable flow-downs, consulting with UNF’s finance/contracts team as needed. (As applicable to the role)
  • Attend training sessions provided by UNF to maintain and keep up to date with UNF’s current policies and procedures. (As applicable to the role)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelors degree required. Master’s degree strongly preferred, preferably in a field related to the sector (e.g., Energy engineering, relevant applied sciences, statistics, data science, economics, mathematics, computer science, information technology, physics, environmental studies.).
  • 10+ years of experience required in technical fields related to the sector, particularly climate and/or the carbon market.
  • Demonstrated technical background required in clean cooking and/or the carbon/climate sector.
  • Demonstrated quantitative background and experience in the construction and use of models and other analytical tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis.
  • French fluency preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in complex project development, management, and execution.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of program planning including developing and overseeing budgets.
  • Ability to translate and communicate complex topics in a variety of forums, tailoring communications to effectively fit and influence the targeted audience, such that messaging can be used for capacity building, policy making, program/project design and implementation, as well as for business development and to guide investment decisions.
  • Ability to communicate complex data through visualization, storytelling, or other creative formats.
